Poverty

The Regional Investing for Health Strategy has a specific Objective on the theme of Poverty. This is ' to reduce poverty in families with children'. The rationale for prioritising action on this theme is that poverty, low income and unemployment all have profoundly negative impacts on people's health and wellbeing. For families living in poverty evidence shows that children in those households are less likely to fulfill their full educational potential.

The challenge for the Eastern Area Investing for Health Partnership on this community of Interest is to activate and encourage organisations to come together to explore how both strategic and practical work can be undertaken to advance this objective within each of the 4 Eastern Board Localities. This is informed by the policy and strategic framework for Anti-Poverty work. OFMDFM are the lead Department for the Northern Ireland Poverty Strategy, effectively replacing the New Targeting Social Need
The Eastern Area IFH Partnership organised a major Conference in April 2007 (relevant presentations and Conference Report available on the publications section of Wellnet site) involving Government Departments and relevant stakeholder organisations within and across the Eastern Area to inform the roll out of Action Plans from the Anti-Poverty Strategy. Current Project work supported by Eastern IFH includes the 'Voices' Project, led by the NI Anti-Poverty Network, which supports people to engage policy makers on the anti-poverty agenda.
